The Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) is responsible, amongst other functions, for the development of unit standards and qualifications for registration on the National Qualifications Framework. The MQA does this through the Mining and Minerals Standards Generating Body (SGB) which was established to primarily fulfill functions such as the design and writing of qualifications, unit standards, learnerships and skills programmes.
The mining and minerals SGB has a responsibility of ensuring adequate representation in the processes of identifying and developing standards. In addition, the Mining Charter sets clear targets for organisations achieve with regards to participation of Historically Disadvantaged South Africans (HDSAs) in the mining and minerals sector.
The primary mechanism through which the SGB performs the function of writing and registering standards is through representative bodies called Technical Reference Groups (TRGs) which consist of technical experts in the relevant areas in which these standards are required in the mining and minerals sector. The Technical Reference Groups also form part of the Quality Council for Trades and Occupation Community of Expert Practitioners.
The challenge for the sector is to ensure adequate skills transfer at an acceptable pace to ensure that the required technical skills are available amongst HDSAs in the mining and minerals sector to provide for their effective participation in TRGs.
The MQA hereby invites HDSAs working, retrenched or retired in the mining and minerals sector to register to participate in the TRGs by submitting their CVs detailing their qualifications and experience on our TRG database for possible participation in the development of these standards. The following are the different TRGs which host sessions at the MQA on a monthly basis:
